Langkawi Sky Cab
The Langkawi cable car is located at Gunung Mat Chinchang, northwest of the island of Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia. This cable car was opened on February 27, 2005. It was built to make it easier for tourists to reach the top of the mountain which is 713 meters high. The limestone mountain panorama of the 500 million year Cambrian geological period is indeed interesting. Its length is the longest in the world at 2.2 km. It has successfully beaten the cable car in Switzerland.
Originally this cable car management system was operated by Langkawi Cable Car. But it is managed by Panorama Langkawi Sdn. Bhd. (PLSB), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Langkawi Development Board (LADA). This cable car transport system was built from April 2001 to August 2004. The total length of the cable is 919.5 meters and has created a record in the Malaysian Book of Records.
History
The Langkawi Sky Bridge was conceptualized in the early 1990s. Due to the high cost of construction and lack of funds, the project was postponed indefinitely. Langkawi Sky Bridge was opened for public use on 28 February 2005. It was opened after 12 Months of Construction of the bridge. During the construction of this bridge, it faced many challenges including transporting materials and prefabricated parts to the top of the mountain using helicopters, optimal loading and weight distribution, structural stability and weight distribution. The Langkawi Sky Bridge has also been used and introduced through the famous foreign film “Don’s Chase: A New Beginning.”
Characteristics
Traveling by cable car can give you a view of the forest around the Telaga Tujuh waterfall and the sea. At the top station, there is a SkyGlide and a mountain path that can allow visitors to the Langkawi Sky Bridge. There are two viewing platforms at the top of Machincang mountain, and other facilities.
There is a 2.5 km long Skytrail that goes through the forest of the upper station and down to the middle station. Then it will pass through the Tujuh Perigi (Telaga Tujuh) waterfall, although walking without a guide through the trail is not recommended because the path is not well maintained and there is a risk of getting lost.
