Dataran Merdeka
Dataran Merdeka, one of the most important historical landmarks in the history of Malaysia.
Dataran Merdeka
formerly known as Padang Kelab Selangor located in the old administrative center of Kuala Lumpur. It was originally a cricket ground for the Selangor Club (now the Selangor Royal Club). Surrounding the field are historic buildings including the Selangor Royal Club Building located at the corner of the field where Kuala Lumpur’s important people often meet, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the National History Museum, and the Memorial Library built in 1909, St Mary’s Anglican cathedral, the stile building Over a hundred years old Gothic and the amazing modern Dayabumi complex.
History
This is where the Union Jack flag was lowered on August 31, 1957 to mark the end of British colonial rule here.
At that moment, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, led thousands of citizens with the sacred cry: “Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!” as the declaration of Malaysia’s independence. Since then, Dataran Merdeka has been the site of the Malaysian independence anniversary parade every year since 1957. Various events are held here. Among them are Citrawarna and Larian Merdeka.
On the other side of Dataran Merdeka is the building of Sultan Abdul Samad. This building, which has the characteristics of Islamic architecture, was completed in 1897 and was once used as the office of several important administrative departments during the British colonial period. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building is the most important landmark built by the British, facing Dataran Merdeka. This beautiful Moorish architecture was completed in 1897, serving as the office of several important departments during the British administration.
Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad
The Sultan Abdul Samad building is located in front of Dataran Merdeka and Selangor Royal Club. It is located at Jalan Raja, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Jalan Raja used to be Gombak Road.
The Sultan Abdul Samad Building located in front of Dataran Merdeka is a landmark for the city of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. This building took the name of Sultan Abdul Samad, in conjunction with the name of the Sultan of Selangor when it was first built in 1894. This building was gazetted as a National Heritage in the Heritage Site category in 2007 by the National Heritage Department, Ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts and Malaysian Heritage under Act 645.
In the early stages, the name of this building was only known as New Government Offices. When the Federation of Malaya was formed in 1948, this building was named the Federal Secretariat.
In 1974, all Selangor State Government offices were moved to Shah Alam. The Malaysian federal government office was moved to Jalan Duta, Damansara. Therefore the name of this building was changed to Sultan Abdul Samad Building in conjunction with the name of the Sultan of Selangor who ruled from 1857 – 1898.
