Masjid Jamek

Architecture

The architecture of this mosque makes it the heart of the city of Kuala Lumpur. Jamek Mosque was the main mosque for Friday prayers and the center of Islamic activities until the construction of the National Mosque in 1967. This mosque could not be enlarged because it was squeezed by the Klang River and the Gombak River. Initially, those who want to pray need to perform ablution at the confluence of the river. Several layers of stairs were built into the river to make it easier for people to take the prayer water.

This mosque is flanked by two minarets and several smaller minarets. The bebawang dome at the top of the prayer hall and at the top of the minaret resembles Moghul architecture.

The Jamek Mosque is an example of “official” British architecture in Malaysia, which combines Moorish and Mughal elements. The red and white stripes of the stone wall, similar to the Jamek Mosque in Cordoba, Spain, form the outer walls of the mosque. Other similarities with Moorish mosques can be seen in the square-shaped pillared arches and detailing with interspersed bands of bricks, plaster and marble.
